Animal photographer Tim Flach presents an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the making of Feline, his latest photographic exploration of one of our most familiar, yet elusive, companions: the cat.
Through personal reflections and exclusive footage, Tim shares the journey of the project — from photographing domestic cats across the globe to capturing wild felines in their natural environments. He explores not only the technical and creative process but also the relationship between humans and animals.
Tim will also address a critical issue facing photographers today: the rise of generative AI and the resulting crisis of trust in imagery. Where once the challenge was getting the animal to stay on set, today the challenge is proving it was ever there. He’ll discuss how this shift has influenced both the approach to his latest book.
Drawing on earlier projects such as Endangered, More Than Human, and Birds, Tim explores how photography can transcend traditional wildlife representation. Through strategic anthropomorphism, he brings out the individuality and emotional presence of his subjects to inspire empathy and environmental awareness. His work is deeply informed by art history, colour theory, and visual perception techniques such as left-gaze bias, all of which contribute to powerful narratives that challenge viewers to see animals not just as subjects, but as sentient beings.
