Birds & Bears - A Minnesota Sampler

Tucked into the forest of Northern Minnesota are two special places: The Sax-Zim Bog and the Vince Shute Bear Sanctuary. This workshop will take you on a guided tour of both locations and offer prime photography opportunities for both birds and black bears. In the Bog, you can expect to see a variety of birds, including many warbler species that call northern Minnesota their summer home. At the Bear Sanctuary, you will have an up-close experience with wild bears that is unlike anything anywhere else in the country.

The group will meet at 6:00am on Thursday morning.  We will be meeting at the Welcome Center in the  Sax-Zim Bog. As you’re planning your Wednesday night accommodations, keep  this location in mind to minimize your early morning drive.   https://saxzim.org/plan-your-visit/#wcdirections

We will photograph at Sax-Zim Bog until about noon.  Then, the group will break for lunch and drive to to next location to be ready for the bear sanctuary.

About Amy Johnson:

Amy Johnson has been a professional photographer for almost 25 years. Her primary business is dog sports photography as the official show photographer for many national agility championships held every year. You may have even seen some of those events broadcast on ESPN! After 15 years exclusively photographing dogs, Amy was looking for a new challenge and found it in birds. All of the skills she had honed on fast dogs gave her a head start on the skills she needed to photograph birds, particularly birds in flight. Her obsession with the technical side of photography fuels her drive to make every shot better than the last.

Amy is also passionate about helping people understand their fancy cameras to get them out of Auto mode. She has been teaching online classes since 2015. Under her instruction, she has watched students become more confident photographers, open their own businesses, and even go on to win awards. She enthusiastically shares her strong technical skills and distinct visual voice with her students and clients.  Amy is fluent in both Canon and Nikon and can get around in the Sony world. Her current kit includes the Canon R3, RF 100-300mm f/2.8, and the EF 600mm f/4.

We recommend extending your stay in nature and making the most of your newly acquired tools and skills as a photographer. By staying on your own through Sunday, you'll have an entire weekend to immerse yourself in the captivating surroundings, further refine your techniques, and unleash your creative vision to capture even more unique and captivating images.

With your new familiarity of the area, venture out into the wild once again and explore different perspectives, lighting conditions, and compositions. Apply the lessons learned during the workshop and experiment with innovative approaches to wildlife photography. Whether you choose to focus on birds or widen your lens to embrace the broader natural landscape, the extra day(s) will grant you the freedom to express your artistic voice and expand the horizons of your portfolio.

Remember to take breaks and immerse yourself in the tranquility of your surroundings. Find a serene spot to sit and observe, allowing nature to reveal its secrets and inspire your next photographic masterpiece. Work to create deeper connection with the environment and a chance to fully appreciate the wonders that unfold in the natural world.

Enjoy the journey, embrace the solitude, and let your creativity soar as you continue to capture the beauty of the natural world.

As you prepare for this unforgettable weekend of nature photography, it's important to consider your overnight accommodations. The options available are diverse, catering to different preferences and comfort levels. The first morning will be near Virginia, MN, the second near Orr, MN.  Here are a few possibilities to help you plan your stay:

    1. Camping: For those seeking a closer connection to nature, pitching a tent is an ideal choice. Fall asleep under a canopy of stars and wake up to the soothing sounds of the wilderness. Please note that camping amenities and availability may vary, so it's recommended to check with the specific campgrounds for details and reservations.
    2. Renting a nearby AirBnB: If you prefer a more private and comfortable setting, renting an AirBnB in the vicinity could be a great option. This allows you to unwind and recharge after a day of photography while enjoying the convenience of modern amenities. By immersing yourself in the local community, you may also gain unique insights into the area's culture and hidden gems.
    3. For those who appreciate the comforts of a hotel, reserving a room in a nearby hotel is a convenient choice. Relax in a cozy bed, take advantage of the hotel's facilities, and indulge in a satisfying breakfast to energize yourself for the day's adventures. Reserving a Hotel Room:  We recommend staying in a hotel in Duluth, Eveleth, Hibbing, or Virginia, MN on Wednesday night (https://ironrange.org/stay/). For Thursday and Friday nights, we recommend looking for a room in Orr, MN (https://www.orrpelicanlake.com/lodging).

Remember, regardless of the option you choose, the beauty and excitement of the birds and bears await you. Let the awe-inspiring nature and the camaraderie of fellow photographers make this a truly unforgettable experience!

    Recommended  equipment:

    • DSLR or mirrorless camera + plenty of batteries and memory cards. There  most likely will not be an opportunity to charge batteries or download cards once we’re in the Bog or at the Sanctuary so don’t underestimate what you may need for each day.

     • Many of the species we expect to see in the Bog are quite small so the longer your lens, the better. Any of the telephoto-zoom lenses, such as  100-400mm, 100-500mm, or 150-600mm are ideal. They offer good reach for small subject with the flexibility to capture larger subjects as well (such as bears).

    • A large prime lens is a good option for photographers comfortable working with them in the field.

    • Handholding or using a monopod is preferred.

    • Tripods are allowed in the Bog, but prohibited in the Bear Sanctuary.

    Other things to bring:

    Rain gear (just in case)

    Sweatshirt/jacket

    Comfortable shoes & socks

    Snacks

    Bug Spray

Note: This workshop is an outdoor event and weather could be an issue.  This will go on rain or shine, so please come prepared for the forecast.  No refunds will be issued.
